Rao Bikaji was born in Sawan Samvat 1495 (A.D. 1439) on the Asuj Sudi 10th S. 1522, (A.D. 1465). He left Jodhpur to conquer a kingdom for himself and came to Desnok, whence he went to Chandasar and subsequently to Kodamdesar. At Kodamdesar he built a small fort and lived there for three years. He subsequently marched to Janglu, and lived there for ten years. This territory was at the time held by Bhatis, whose leader Shekhoji's daughter he married. The Bhatis opposed Bikaji building a fort at Kodamdesar, but he overpowered them. In S. 1542 (A.D. 1488), he laid the foundation of the present city of Bikaner. He then conquered Ladharia, Shekhsar, Sidmukh, Raslana, Suin and other neighboring villages and the Godara Jats acknowledged him as their chief. Rao Bikaji also subdued a portion of the Khichi Rajput territory.
At the same time Rao Bikaji's brother Bidaji conquered Ladnu, Daronpur, Chapar and other villages said to number about 1400 on the Jeypore border belonging to the Mohal tribe, whose chief Ajit he slaughtered. Sarang Khan, imperial Subedar of Hisar, assisted the Mohals and was defeated by Rao Bikaji and his uncle Kandhalji, but subsequently he succeeded in killing Kandhalji in another engagement and in third fight Kandhalji's death was avenged by Rao Bikaji, who had ascended the Jodhpur throne in succession to his father. The two brothers were, however, reconciled, Sujanji having made over hereditary heirlooms (throne, state umbrella, Chowar, state sword, the Idols of Salag Ram and Nagniji, Bairisal drum, Dal Sangar horse and cooking pots) retaining for himself the Jodhpur territory. Subsequently, Rao Bikaji extended his territory invading Khandela (now in Jeypore state and Rewari). The number of villages included in the Bikaner State during Rao Bikaji's reign amounted to 3000. Rao Bikaji died on Asuj Sud 3rd S. 1561(A.D. 1504), leaving seven wives (who became suttee) and 10 sons. |
