Raja Rai Singh ascended the throne after the death of his father Rao Kalyanmal. He accompanied the emperor on his expedition against Gujarat and showed remarkable valour. Then he defeated Chandrasen, the son of Maldeo of Jodhpur at sojat and Siryari with the help of Mughal army. Raja Rai Singh went to Kabul and Bengal on different expeditions. He remained Subedar of Burhanpur (Deccan) for seven years from 1585 to 1592 A.D. and Governor of Surat in 1596. The foundation stone of Junagarh Fort was laid in 1589 A.D. under the supervision of Karam Chand Bachhawat. The fine Fort took three years to complete. Prince Salim also relied on the sincerity and loyalty of Raja Rai Singh in his internal conflicts with Khusrau. Jahangir (salim) raised his mansabdari from 4000 to 5000.
