Maharaja Sardar Singh was born in S. 1875 (A.D. 1819), and succeeded his father Maharaja Ratan Singh in 1852 A.D. at the age of 33. A large army had to be maintained to protect the borders of the state and to control the disaffected Thakurs. The Maharaja appointed 18 Diwans from the time of his installation up to 1869 A.D. Of all these Diwans, Ram Lal Dowarkani was most popular for his justice, good administration and honesty. Important events during his reign were:
Grant of the Tibbi llaka to the Bikaner Darbar: - The British Government granted the Tibbi llaka to the Maharaja in recognition of his services to it during the Mutiny of 1857 A.D. Subscription to the Mayo College: -In 1871, Maharaja Sardar Singh subscribed one Lakh of Rupees to the Mayo College at Ajmer. Establishment of the Civil. Criminal, and Revenue Courts: - The Civil, Criminal and Revenue Courts were also established the same day with the said officer's advice. Working of the Council:- The work of the Council, however, did not progress satisfactorily during the time of Maharaja Sardar Singh, who died suddenly on the 16th May 1872, leaving no legitimate issue. | | |
