Maharaja Surat Singh was born in S. 1822 (A.D. 1765). He succeeded his nephew Maharaja Partap Singh on Asuj Bad 12'h S. 1844 (A.D. 1788). Important events during his reign were:
Bikaner and Jodhpur Reconciled: - In S. 1848 (A.D. 1791), a reconciliation was effected between Maharaja Surat Singh of Bikaner and Maharaja Bije Singh of Jodhpur. Peace made with Jeypore: - In S. 1855 (A.D. 1798), peace was also made with the Jeypore Chief. The Bhatis Subdued: - In S. 1856 (A.D. 1799), the Bhatis of Bhatner rebelled against the Biknaer Chief, who, however, defeated them at Dabli, where a fort was constructed and named Fatehgarh (the fort of victory). The rebels again made common cause and took possession of the fort, but the Maharaja again captured it. Bikaner Invades Bahawlpore: - In S. 1858 (A.D. 1801), Maharaja Surat Singh sent an army of 25,000 men to assist Khuda Baksh Daud Potra of Maujgarh against Bahawal Kha, the Chief of Bahawalpore, who being defeated concluded peace with Khuda Baksh, and the Bikaner army evacuated the country and received 2 Lakhs of Rupees for army expenses from Khuda Baksh. In S. 1855 (A.D. 1798), the Bikaner troops besieged and captured the fort of Khangarh (in Bahawalpur). It was said, that the fort contained a large treasure, but nothing was found in it. Bhatner Re-captured by Bikaner: -In S. 1861 (A.D. 1804), the Bikaner troops besieged the Bhatner fort, and after a siege of 5 months and 2 days recaptured it from Zabte Khan Bhati on the Baisakh Bad 4~ S. 1862 (A.D. 1805), and named it Hanumangarh on account of its capture on Tuesday, which is the natal day of Hanumanji, a Hindu deity. Jodhpur Invasion by Bikaner : - At this time,- Dhaunkal Singh was engaged in making war with Maharaja Man Singh for the throne of Jodhpur. The Bikaner Darbar sent 80,000 troops for the assistance of Dhaunkal Singh, but they had to retire after an unsuccessful siege of 7 months. Peace made between Bikaner and Jeypore: - In S. 1870 (A.D. 1813), peace was concluded between Maharaja Surat Singh of Bikaner and Maharaja Man Singh of Jodhpur. At this period, Thakur Sheoji Singh of Churu rebelled against the Bikaner Darbar. The Churu fort was thereupon besieged in Bhadon S. 1871 (A.D. 1814). The Thakur was killed and the fort captured. Treaty made between the Bikaner Darbar and the British Government:- Maharaja Surat Singh entered into a treaty with the British Government on the 9th March 1818. Government assists Bikaner with troops: - After this, on the request of the Bikaner Darbar, the British troops conquered from the rebels Fatehabad, Hisar, Sidmukh, Jassans, Birkali, Dadreva, Churu, Sulakhnia, Nima, Sujangarh, Bahadra, etc. and made them all over to the Bikaner Chief with the exception of Bahadra, which the Government retained in their possession for 4 years as a guarantee for the payment of Rs. 75,525 the expenses of the campaign. Maharaja Surat Singh was well known for his generosity. He died on the Chait Sud 9th S. 1884 (A.D. 1828). |
